What is a TCK?

safari

Before we go on this journey together let’s start from the beginning and meaning of this blog. What is a TCK and what does it stand for? TCK is an acronym for third-culture kid. It can be defined as someone who has spent a significant amount of time cross-culturally or in a different culture from his/her parents. When I was six months old my parents packed up everything they owned and moved us half-way across the world. I spent almost eighteen years of my life in East Africa – eight years in Kenya and ten years in Ethiopia.

For me, being a TCK means that I don’t know where I am from or who I am.  I am caught in between two continents – my birth country and my home country. The challenging part is that in either country, I can’t truly feel at home. I straddle between the two trying to find pieces of each that complete who I am.

I want to warn you, as we take this journey together I’m going to be honest, I’m going to share the struggles, along with the successes.

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to my blog! My name is Priscilla Burr and I grew up as a missionary kid to Kenya and Ethiopia. One of the challenges of growing up as a third culture kid (TCK) is knowing where you belong. I often get confused  when someone asks me, “Where are you from?” At least three different countries come to my mind.

The purpose of this blog is to explore what it is like growing up overseas (for those of you who are not TCKs). As well as share my journey to finding home (for those of you who are TCKs). I plan to include tips, inspiration, stories, and recipes I learned along the way.

I can’t wait to take this journey with you and look forward to hearing your story too!

Priscilla
